Digital Detox: Why unplugging is crucial for your beauty sleep

Double Chevron Left Back to News

Do you run into the habit of scrolling on your phone right before bed? Chances are you make up the 71% of people who admit that they fall asleep with their smartphones.

We get it, our phones are a great distraction. But they’re also extremely addictive and negatively impacting your ability to get your well-deserved beauty rest.

The fact is that when you stare at your phone right before bedtime, your brain remains active and alert. The blue light in our electronic devices can suppress the production of melatonin, which increases feelings of alertness. Over a long period of time, lack of sleep can negatively impact your mood and health.

In order to help curb this, Polysleep recommends you do a digital detox to improve your sleep cycle. This involves unplugging from your electronic devices and making the effort to use them less.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Establish a Screen-Free Bedtime Routine

Engage in relaxing, screen-free activities at least 30 minutes before your bed. For example, if you typically go to sleep at 10 p.m., then you’d turn off all electronic devices by 9:30 p.m. at the latest. During that time you could read a book, write in your journal or even take a nice, hot bath. The key is to prepare your brain to wind down for the evening and have a nice, restful, uninterrupted sleep.

2. Turn Off Notifications

It’s simple, yet effective: shutting off all notifications in your phone settings can help you resist the urge to pick up your phone every time a message pops up. You can also turn on ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode so that texts and calls don’t come through.

3. Keep Your Phone Outside the Bedroom

Last but not least - if all else fails - keep your cell phone and all other electronic devices outside of your bedroom. If you need to set an alarm for the morning, get a good old fashioned alarm clock. That way, the only thing able to wake you from your beauty sleep will be your alarm clock! Thank us later.
