Everything you need to know about sleeping well with a cold!

Double Chevron Left Back to News

We've all spent nights blowing our lives away because of a bad cold, and waking up in a bad state not only because of germs, but also because of lack of sleep. That's why Polysleep offers you these few tips to sleep well, to make your life easier and to help you spend better nights... as well as to limit collateral damage, meaning your better half who has to suffer from your sneezing attacks!

How to sleep well with a cold?

To sleep well with a cold, there are a few things you can do to help you breathe if you're congested, and to improve your sleep despite your cold. Don't thank us, it's a gift!

  1. Wash your nose.

Not so much on the outside—well, at least a little bit—but internally! To do this, you can use a physiologic serum or a saline water solution (homemade or bought in a pharmacy). One puff in each nostril and it's done. It's gross, but it works! Once you'll have put some water in each nostril, blow your nose thoroughly; saltwater has an immediate effect on your sinuses and you'll breathe much better!

  1. Limit the temperature in your room to 19 degrees.

We all know it, when we have a cold, we keep shivering and all we want is to be warm, even if it means turning our room into a sauna or stealing all the blankets in the house to wrap ourselves in them, including the dog's. However, by turning up the thermostat in your room, you risk spreading germs, and that's what we want to avoid, right?

So wrap yourself under the duvet and turn down the heat! Also, it seems that keeping your feet warm promotes sleep by relaxing your body, so pull out your warmest socks or put your better half's calves to work! In the morning, don't forget to ventilate the room for about ten minutes to kill stubborn germs! And if you have an antimicrobial foam mattress, you'll reduce the amount of germs and allergens even more—you'll breathe easier!

  1. Buy yourself a humidifier.

If the air is dry, your nose will be dry too. And when you try to sleep with a cold, it's not ideal! That's why installing a cold air humidifier—warm air will increase the room’s temperature; remember tip #2! — is a very good thing to help you sleep better. And is it necessary to specify to change the water every day and to clean the filter regularly?

  1. Raise your pillow.

To sleep better despite a stuffy nose, you can raise your sleeping position by folding your pillow or sleeping in a semi-seated position; you'll cough less, and you'll have less congestion, this way improving the quality of your sleep. You'll find that you'll be much more comfortable this way than on your back, which is not one of the best positions for sleeping with a stuffy nose!

  1. Honey to the rescue!

If you like and consume honey, know that it can quickly become your best friend for a good night's sleep when you have a cold. In fact, not only does honey have antimicrobial properties, but it can also boost your natural defenses. A cup of warm milk or herbal tea with a spoonful of honey will soothe your cough and decongest your nasal passages. Plus, it's really good!

  1. Get some rest!

There are other simple things you can do to help you sleep better with a cold, but remember that the key to recovery starts with a good night's sleep and REST! The sooner you recover, the sooner you'll be back on your feet— and the sooner you can give your dog back its blankie!

To sum up, to sleep better with a cold, you need to:

  • Clean your airways,
  • Not overheat the room where you sleep,
  • Ensure a good level of humidity,
  • Adopt an elevated sleeping position,
  • Take hot drinks with honey,

While these tips won't make you heal much faster, they will help you get through all the discomfort of a cold more easily! After all, it's always nice to pamper yourself, isn't it?
